Book of Mormon Internal Evidence (19): Memorable Profound Verses – Alma

The Book of Mormon is filled with memorable verses that contain profound truths and rich doctrine. These verses are a powerful witness of the Book of Mormon divinity

Every chapter includes verses and phrases worth highlighting. Each of these profound verses can, and have been, the basis for talks and lessons.  Some of these verses have become very popular in the church.

Below is a very small sampling from the Book of Alma. If you take time to ponder these verses, you “see” and “feel” the hand of the Lord in the text.

Alma 5:14
Have ye spiritually been born of God?  Have ye received his image in your countenances?  Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?

Alma 5:26
And now behold, I say unto you, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?

Alma 5:27-28
Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God?  could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble?  That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?

Behold, are ye stripped of pride?  I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God.  Behold, ye must prepare quickly; for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand, and such an one hath not eternal life.

Alma 12:9
It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.

Alma 17:2-3
Now these sons of Mosiah where with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.

But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.

Alma 30:44
But Alma said unto [Korihor]: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God?  Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets?  The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.

Alma 31:5
And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just–yea, it had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword or anything else, which had happened unto them–therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God.

Alma 34:14
And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.

Alma 34:32
For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.

Alma 37:11
Now these mysteries are not yet fully made known unto me; therefore I shall forebear.

Alma 37:35
O, remember my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God.

Alma 37:36-37
Yea, cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord forever.

Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things ye shall be lifted up at the last day.

Alma 39:11
How great iniquity ye have brought upon the people, for when they saw your conduct they would not believe in my words.

Alma 41:10
Wickedness never was happiness.

It is inconceivable that Joseph Smith could have made up these memorable and profound verses while he was orally dictating the Book of Mormon. Remember, he had no notes.  He had no degrees in theology. He had no read backs.  And he did all of this in 60+ days.
