As one who has struggles with mild to severe chronic back pain, I take comfort from a statement Steve Irwin made on an episode of “The Crocodile Hunter.”
This wildlife series was very popular. The Australian host demonstrated, and played with, dangerous animals.
While filming an episode at the Great Barrier Reef, he died when a stingray barb pierced his chest. It was a freak accident, but the Crocodile Hunter died while doing what he loved.
There was one episode of “The Crocodile Hunter” I shall never forget. A small nonpoisonous snake latched onto Irwin’s hand. Its fangs slowly gnawed on the flesh between his thumb and forefinger. The Crocodile Hunter’s face was contorted with pain.
He exclaimed, “Crickey that hurts! But as my Daddy taught me, ‘Pain is a good thing. It lets you know you are still alive.’”
Ever since that episode, I “try” to remind myself: “Pain is a good thing! It lets me know I am still alive!” It gives me solace.
