My First Answered Prayer

“Sunday Sermon”

The Lord has been very gracious and generous in answering my prayers.

My first answered prayer, that I remember, occurred when I was a young boy. A friend had thrown my baseball into the ivy in my parents’ front yard.  Half of the yard was covered with overgrown large-leaf ivy. It was like the “Bermuda Triangle.”  Anything that went into the ivy disappeared.  It never came out.  It was lost forever.

Knowing this, my friend walked home. I frantically combed through the ivy, pulling back the leaves.  After a long time, I gave up. I knew that my efforts were futile.

So, I prayed and asked Heavenly Father for help.  I suddenly “felt” directed to a certain spot.  I pulled back the leaves.  Sure enough, there was my ball.

That day, I gained a testimony of the power of prayer. I learned that prayers are answered.

Over the years, the Lord has continued to answer my prayers to find lost objects, like keys, cellphones, and documents. (Most of these prayers are answered through a ministering angelmy wife.)

I have also learned that prayers are not always answered how we expect.  Nor are they always answered when we expect. Sometimes, the answer is “No.”  Occasionally, we don’t recognize the answer.  At times, we don’t receive or recognize the answer for months or years.

But I know that God does answer prayers.

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16)
