There are two falls from grace. The first is the fall of Adam and Eve. The second is our own personal fall.
The Fall Brought Physical and Spiritual Death
The fall of Adam and Eve brought two kinds of death into the world: physical death and spiritual death. Death is a separation. Physical death is the separation of the body and spirit. Spiritual death is separation from God. If these two deaths had not been conquered by Christ, our bodies and spirits would have been separated forever, and we could never have returned to live again with our Heavenly Father. Satan would have won. (Alma 34:14; 2 Nephi 9: 6-12; Alma 42: 7-15.)
Jesus Overcame Physical Death
Because of the fall of Adam and Eve, every person will die physically. The Savior overcame this physical death. Because of His death on the cross, the resurrection, and the atoning sacrifice every person will be resurrected. This is His glorious gift of grace to each of us. (1 Cor 15:21-22; Job 14: 14; 19: 25-26; Luke 24: 36-39; Matthew 27: 52-53; Alma 40:23.)
Christ Overcame the Spiritual Death
Because of the fall of Adam and Eve sin came into the world, and we were separated from God forever. Jesus conquered spiritual death. Because of His atoning sacrifice children are born innocent and do not need baptism. (Moroni 8: 8-12; Mosiah 3: 16) Because of His atoning sacrifice those who died without the chance to accept Jesus and His gospel in mortality, will be given that chance in the spirit world. (1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 4:6; D&C 138: 30-37)
Jesus Christ Was the Only One Who Could Overcome Death and Atone for Our Sins
- There are several reasons why Jesus Christ was the only one who could be our Savior and Redeemer.
Heavenly Father chose Him to be the Savior.
- Christ was the Only Begotten Son of God and thus had power to overcome death.
- Jesus was “God himself.”
- Christ was also the only person to ever live free of sin. This made Him a worthy sacrifice to pay for the sins of others. (Acts 4:12; Mosiah 3: 17; Alma 42:15; 2 Nephi 25:23; 2 Nephi 25:26; 2 Nephi 33:6)
Christ Overcame the Fall of Adam and Eve
In short, Christ completely overcame the fall of Adam and Eve.
1 Cor 15:21-22:
“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
Articles of Faith 2:
“We believe that men will not be punished for Adam’s transgression.”
Christ Also Made it Possible to Overcome Our Own Personal Fall
But there is a second fall. When we reach an age of accountable and sin, we separate ourselves from God. This is our own personal fall.
The Savior atoned for our personal fall in Gethsemane and on the Cross. It is impossible for us to fully comprehend this infinite and eternal atonement. Somehow, He suffered and paid the price for all our sins.
Because of the Christ’s atonement, as we strive to follow Him, live His gospel and keep His commandments, He will mercifully forgive our sins. As we strive to follow Him, He will heal us and replace guilt and shame with peace and joy. His atonement makes it possible for us to return again to live with our Heavenly Father forever. (Isaiah 1:18, Romans 6:23, John 3:16, John 11:25; 3 Nephi 27: 13-21; D&C 19:16-19)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Articles of Faith 3:
“We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”
The atonement made it possible for us to overcome our personal fall through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and the principles, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel. (Alma 42: 15, 23-24; 2 Ne: 23-26) Because of Jesus:
- We can return to God and be reunited with Him.
- We can gain all knowledge.
- We can become like our Heavenly Father and Jesus.
- Our families can be united eternally.
- We can experience ultimate and eternal joy.
“And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.”
John 3: 16:
“For God so love the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosesoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
“For behold, this is my work and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”
By overcoming death and sin, Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. This was His wonderful and marvelous gift of love and grace.
“Christ paid a debt, that He did not owe, because we owed a debt, that we could not pay.“
