Percentages Do Not Prove Racism

Commentary

Sadly, racism and slavery have always existed, and tragically, they exist throughout the world today.

An estimated 40 million people are enslaved today, primarily as slave laborers and sex slaves.

I don’t believe racism/tribalism, which underlie slavery, is inherent in human nature.  I believe it is taught and learned. And if it is learned, then it can be unlearned.

How rampant is racism today in America?”

People often use numerical disparity to “prove” that racism in America is systemic and widespread.  But as the following examples demonstrate, this approach, by itself, is simplistic and flawed.

Racism does exist. However, numerical disparity alone does not prove racism. Commentators often highlight some disparities while suppressing contradictory ones. This is the fallacy of “cherry-picking” and “card-stacking.” Remember, “there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.” (Mark Twain)
