Doctor’s Excuse: Defendant is Too “Anxious” to Come to Court

“Court Case Friday”

Last month, I had a case, where the defendant was arrested for driving under the influence. When he failed to appear in my court, I issued a warrant for his arrest.

The next day I received a letter from his doctor.

Dear Honorable Judge:

I am requesting you excuse Mr. K. from appearing in court due to his level of anxiety for court appearances. I appreciate your time and attention.

Sincerely, Dr. M.  M.D.

I was tempted to write back:

Dr. Dr. M.

Everyone who comes to court has “anxiety,” including me.

Feel free to give Mr. K. a prescription for Valium, so he can cope with his anxiety coming to court.

Most people self-medicate before coming to my court anyway.
